I surprised myself by not having talked about this story yet, but I came across it this morning and had to post as it is one of my absolute favorites depsite the fact that it rips your heart out and stomps all over it, but I know you all well enough to know you like that (you masochist you).
So this is a parentlock story about Hamish getting cancer and John and Sherlock, his parents of 6 years, trying to deal with it in their own ways, which in the end are so completely different but so like the characters if you think about it. I thought this little passage told it best:
"John is all movement, now gently taking Hamish over to the bed and tugging off his jumper and shirt before tugging on his light blue hospital gown that he’s practically swimming in. The boy is all dark curls and knobby knees as John makes him sit on the edge of the bed while he pries off his trousers, shoes, and socks. He folds the clothing in a neat pile before he slides said pile into the bottom dresser drawer.
Sherlock just stands there.”
Not to give too much away (though you only need to get to the tags of the story to find out what happens), it is easily on par with Alone in the Water. It is beautifully written, the characters are on point and it too will leave you a sobbing mess by the end , but like I said before, I know you like it.
Withoutawish is by no means prolific but is perhaps one of the best authors out there when you are looking for a little angst to fill your afternoon.
